Ricky just recently celebrated his 10th anniversary at Robot, and we thought it would be fun to check in with him and to see how it’s going.
Q: How has your role evolved?
A: I started as a web developer, but over time I have transitioned from production work to more of a consulting role where I spend time understanding client needs and recommending solutions.
Q: Is this this career progression you expected?
A: Absolutely! I anticipated taking on more responsibilities. Client consulting is a natural progression, and I embrace it.
Q: It sounds like you are wearing several hats now. What is it that you most like doing?
A: The hands-on web development is still my favorite thing to do. I thrive on creating custom websites, and I love the opportunity to push technology boundaries and bring innovative designs to life. As our company has grown, so have the demands of our clients and their need to remain competitive. Being on the team that helps them meet their goals makes me proud.
Q: Do you have a favorite client or project?
A: Luminaria, a non-profit art festival, stands out. We created an interactive map for their event in 2019, showcasing artists, bands, and schedules.
Q: Is there anything you think would surprise a new employee, or do you have advice for people applying to work at Robot?
A: The collaborative and inclusive atmosphere is a pleasant surprise. Everyone here is extremely supportive. The company’s commitment to maintaining a positive work environment has been a consistent source of empowerment, and the collaborative culture we have maintained as we’ve grown impresses me. For those applying – be open, honest, and communicative. The culture of Robot Creative is one of collaboration and transparency within the team at all times.
Q: When did you realize RC was the right place for you?
A: My very first project at Robot Creative affirmed that it was the right place for me. In my first week, I was entrusted with an entire website project without being micromanaged. That reinforced my confidence in myself and fostered immediate trust in the company.
Q: What is the leadership team like at Robot?
A: During my first interview, I immediately liked the CEO, Lara August, and the support I have received from the whole leadership team has helped me grow. Lara has coached me on client sales and consulting, Andrew on design principles and Lana on project management. Their guidance has been invaluable.
Q: What kinds of changes have you seen in Robot’s web development over the past decade?
A: Ten years is a long time in technology terms…so a lot has changed! Ten years ago, we did a lot of static sites for small and mid-sized companies. As the content management platforms have evolved, we’ve become experts in developing custom responsive designs on platforms such as WordPress, SquareSpace and Shopify.
Q: What has been your most challenging web development project?
A: The Y&L Consulting website project stands out as one of the most challenging due to its impressive volume of content. It took a lot of problem-solving to transition the content into a streamlined format that would be more easily accessible for users.
Q: Looking ahead, what’s your vision for your career at Robot?
A: I aspire to become a senior partner at Robot Creative while staying involved in web development and expanding my knowledge of tools and APIs to drive growth.
Q: What defines Robot Creative for you?
A: We’re transparent, honest, and focused on delivering the best results to our clients. We don’t overpromise and strive to provide top-notch products.
