Yamil Bautista recently joined Robot Creative as an Account Manager, bringing a background that spans retail, marketing and operations. His path into a role on a marketing agency team was not linear, but that range of experience has shaped how he approaches communication, collaboration and client work.
We sat down with Yamil to talk about his journey into marketing, what he’s learning in agency life and how he works with clients.
A Nonlinear Path into Marketing
Yamil’s career began in retail, where he spent nearly a decade of his professional life. During that time, he developed an interest in marketing through close collaboration with internal teams, which led him to pursue the field more intentionally.
After initially stepping away from college, he later returned to complete a degree in Communications Design with a focus on advertising and graphic design. While still in school, he participated in the 4A’s multicultural bootcamp, working on real client projects for brands such as Sony Music, Allstate and Roc Nation.
From there, his experience expanded quickly. He interned in New York with Hearst Media, moved to Miami to work across advertising and social media for a small company and later joined an IT manufacturing company in Denver, where he gained experience in operations and cross-functional team management.
He recently completed a master’s degree in marketing with a specialization in digital strategy. Balancing full-time work with graduate school strengthened his ability to manage competing priorities and adapt quickly, both of which carry into his role today.
Learning to Navigate Clients and Teams
In his role as an Account Manager, Yamil works across multiple stakeholders, often within the same organization. Each person brings a different communication style, set of priorities and perspective, which makes alignment a key part of the job.
“A big part of the job is framing ideas in a way that makes sense to each audience and brings clarity to different perspectives.”
That requires paying close attention to how people process information and adjusting accordingly. Some conversations require a high-level view, while others call for more detail.
He approaches communication with empathy, focusing on understanding where others are coming from so he can respond clearly and keep projects moving forward.
Adapting to Agency Life
Marketing agency work has introduced a new level of pace and variety. Working across industries and audiences requires flexibility and a willingness to learn quickly.
Shifting between B2B and B2C clients, for example, means constantly adjusting how ideas are framed and communicated. For Yamil, that challenge is part of what makes the work engaging.
He is especially drawn to campaign work, where planning, execution and ongoing optimization all play a role. Rather than viewing campaigns as one-time efforts, he sees them as something that should evolve based on performance and feedback.
Supporting Client Growth
Yamil is motivated by the opportunity to support clients as they grow and take the next step in their business. He values being part of that process and contributing to long-term progress.
“I’m passionate about supporting businesses as they grow.”
That perspective carries into how he approaches client relationships. He focuses on building trust, setting clear expectations and working collaboratively to move projects forward.
Looking Ahead
As he continues to grow in his role, Yamil is particularly interested in how technology will shape the future of marketing. He expects AI and automation to play a larger role, while also recognizing the continued importance of strategy and human insight.
Q&A
What has been the biggest adjustment moving into agency life?
“The biggest adjustments have been pace and variety.
In an in-house setting the focus is the company you work for while in an agency you’re balancing multiple clients, shifting priorities and staying organized across several moving pieces.”
What have you learned so far about working with clients that you didn’t expect?
“One thing I’ve noticed is how different every client is in how they communicate and make decisions. There’s no one-size approach. Some want a lot of detail, others just want the high level.
Learning how to adjust to each style has been a bigger part of the role than I expected.”
How has your background outside of agency work shaped how you approach this role?
“I think it’s made me more grounded in how I work with clients.
I’ve been on their side before, so I understand the pressure, the timelines and how things get executed internally. Because of that, I try to keep things simple, clear and focused on what really matters.
I don’t overcomplicate things, I just want to make sure we’re helping clients move forward and achieve their goals.”
What do you enjoy most about being an Account Manager so far?
“Working with motivated business owners who are focused on results and trust us to help them get there.
Being part of the client conversations and helping move projects forward is what I enjoy the most.”
